Do You Need UM/UIM

The Answer Is YES! UM/UIM is an abbreviation for Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM insurance is insurance that you buy to protect yourself, unlike liability insurance where you are protecting someone else if you are involved in ab accident with them. These policies are a package deal, so if you have UM, you have UIM. However, they are slightly different in how they kick in. Here is how they work: Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage: This coverage comes into play when you get hit by a driver WHO HAS NO INSURANCE. In that situation, you can be on the hook for your medical bills. You will have no protection for your lost wages or pain and suffering. Chances are the other driver has no personal assets so there is nothing to recover. With UM coverage, your insurance takes the place of the other drivers insurance and pays for everything that the other drivers insurance would have paid for. It does not change the fact that the other driver is at fault, it just protects you from the danger of them not having coverage. UM can also kick in if someone hits you and runs away. Underinsured Motorist (UIM) Coverage. This coverage comes ibto play when you nget hit by a driver who has too little insurance. Your insurance comes in to supplement their insurance. SO you get paid by both your insurance and their insurance. Unfortunately, the minimum limits does not even cover all of your medical bills in most cases, so having the buffer to make sure you can get all the treatment you need ti get back to full health often goes a long way..
